Advertising With Ppc - 3 Steps To Get You Going

by:Eric Firestone
Step 1 - Creating Your Account
There are many places where you can advertise with the PPC method. For this article we will use Google AdWords.
Go to Google AdWords and click on signup now to setup your account. You can choose Starter Edition or the Standard Edition. Its entirely up to you.
Step 2 - Creating your campaign
Once you have setup your account, now you need to setup your campaign. You will select a name for your campaign and ad group. Once you are done with this part you will need to create your text ads that will be displayed to your potential customers. If you need examples just go to google.com and search for something similar to what you are selling. Once you have the body of the ad figured out all you need to do is put your display URL which is visually displayed with your ad and the URL that people will go to when they click on your ad.
The important part of this is to make sure that you setup ads that are going to catch the eye of potential customers. You also want to make sure that you don't get a ton of clicks from browsers that have no intention of purchasing your product or service.
Through AdWords you also have the option of doing image ads (ie. banners, skyscrapers, etc.), print ads, and tv ads. All of these can be very good methods of promoting products, but text and image are the cheapest methods to start with.
Step 3 - Configuring your ad group
I would recommend that when you first start your campaign you should keep your CPC (Cost-Per-Click) to a low amount. I usually start anywhere from .05 to .15 and let the campaign run for a few days to see how it does. If i like the results I will leave it alone. If not I can up the CPC amount. This way you can see how much good traffic you can get for a small price.
You also have the option of setting CPC per keyword. If you have a keyword that isn't performing very well, but you think it should be then try changing the CPC just for that keyword. This way you keep your average CPC down and your total cost down.
You can also set the area for which your ads will appear. This can be very useful if you only want to focus your campaign in a certain area. There is no sense in advertising a small business in Colorado to people in Florida unless you want to do business there. This setting is adjusted in the campaign settings area under Target Audience. You can choose select cities or there are bundles that you can choose from.
The most important thing is to let your campaign run for a few days to see how it performs before you change things. Your best gauge of performance is letting it run and adjusting from there.
